In April 2023, the United Nations’ (UN) Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls, its causes and consequences, Ms. Reem Alsalem, released a report entitled Custody, violence against women and children (hereafter, the report). The report (2023) is based on concerns raised by the Special Rapporteur and members of the Platform of Independent Expert Mechanisms on the Elimination of Discrimination and Violence Against Women related to “the pattern of ignoring intimate partner violence against women in determining child custody cases across jurisdictions”.
